You don't think mild steel would bend too easily? Its only 5/8" diameter and Jolt comes in for pretty rough landings, as seen in the last event. The length of the bolt is important too. I already tested that Jolt can self-right from an almost vertical position. If the bolt is too short, Jolt will just thrash about likeat the last event. If the bolt is too long it will bend easily & weigh too much. The bolt in the photo is a bit on the short side to my mind, but still worth testing. If it doesn't work, I can get some threaded rod and progressively chop it down until I get the perfect length.

Edit: if I can get a large piece of MDF for a floor by Friday, we can test it then Very Happy Very Happy

Maybe use some 4140 steel and flame temper the top 75% of the bolt and leave the bottom 25% untempered to prevent is shearing off.

really you want something "springy" on the top anyway and a good mounting for it. perhaps a spring steel rod, say 3mm or so across?
mounting it would be interesting but hey nothings going to hurt it.

mmm... How about a piece of car exhaust tubing to slide over the locking collar on the Magmotor gearbox and use a hose clamp to lock around it. This would be very similar to Mega-Byte.

There is only 300 grams of spare weight - a wide tube would that up really fast. I'm going to test with the bolt and see if there is any promise in the idea and take it from there.

I checked out the broken relay today - I thought I had done something stupid to it, but it seems the internal metal frame of the relay just broke apart Confused. The Whyachi relay is pretty well constructed so I can't see how two matches could break it. Next time I will make a mount that supports the relay from both sides.

I had a go at brazing today, using silver alloy and map gas; everything said it produced fumes that would kill me, so it was guaranteed fun Laughing. It's not as strong as welding but I can see it coming very handy on smaller bots and it was dead easy to do. I will have a go at brazing the relay back together once I figure out how to reassemble it.

The MDF model is proving very handy; several features that looked OK in CAD needed tweaking and I am getting some of the wiring done before the real chassis is even started.

It may not be of much help to you now, but you could replace the mag with 3 speed 900 torque motors. they can run at up to 40 v. if you'd use 3 on 24 v, that would give you almost 1.4 kW Very Happy. They're only 5 cm diameter, so you could lower jolt's chassis and have a less flippy bot.

I got mine 40€/piece, you can find em at 35. have a look at http://shop.graupner.de/webuerp/servlet/AI?ARTN=6373

I hope its usefull for you or someone else Smile

Magmotor is a 3.5HP motor with a lot more torque then 3 Speed 900's. Magmotor would draw less amperage too. I'd have to say that the only thing in comparison that the Speed 900's going for them is that they are probably built better then the Magmotor with it's mag lev floating magnets Laughing

Yeah, but it's not like he's using 3.5 hp powering his weapon. I know it's not as good as a mag, but falling over with every good hit isn't that good either. Smile

you can allways built a lrk with a nice phoenix HV 85 powering it...
