Linko-Rama tonight.. Laughing Another Link well worth reading for those interested in how and why PPM (or "FM") and PCM radios work the way they do.. One of the best tech explanations of the reasons for both I've seen so far. make sure you follow the "pro's and cons" links within the page for the full story.

The issues raised by Original Carnage were of concern to me when I first wanted to buy a radio a year ago. The reasponses that were given in this thread are simmilar to what I was told at the time. I assume it was the same for all of us.

It is good that we now have more experience and can give friendly and helpful advice to newcomers.

as far as we (Robowars) are concerned, determining the legality of your radio according the ACA is up to you. We are not responsible for your compliance with the law, just with the rules of our competition.

Our responsibility covers making sure the frequency you are using does not clash with any other competitors at our event, and as long as that is done, we're happy with whatever frequency you choose.. be it 29, 36, 75, 433 mhz.

Non-standard (not hobby) custom radio controls must be approved by us first, since we dont want your home-made radio jamming other people and we know hobby systems dont do this, other than that its your choice.

Mate, keep on asking questions. It is the only way to find answers.
Brett is a good person to ask. He has lots of tech knowledge and has done a great deal of research into robots.

Hi Original Carnage..

Dont be too sensitive about poking a stick into the occasional hornets nest on web-forums.. you arent expected to know what was recently dicussed and thrashed out before you came along, so you have to expect the occasional groan when you unintentionally revive an old discussion.. Laughing

If you want to browse around the ABBL forum at www.abbl.org there are a lot of older discussions there.. One day I'm going to go through and sort out the best of them and add them to the ulitmate guides section here for newcomers to read through.

Until then, feel free to ask questions here.

how higher crystal freq can you put in an fm transmitter?

And the higher you go the closer to ground freq you get so it is less likely to have interfearence?

Transmiters are only tuned for a specific band of frequencies; 27MHz (all models. commonly AM), 36MHz (model aircraft only), 40MHz (surface models only), 50MHz (a Ham operators license is needed to operate this band) and for americans, canadiansand Japanise 72MHz (model aircraft) and 75MHz(surface models). Each band has a number of frequencies to choose from by changing crystals. But you cannot change bands simply by changing crystals. The transmiter will require re-tunning to that new band. Newer radios can be re-tuned by changing the frequency module, which is a box plugged into the back of the radio, to new one tunned to the new band.
Likewise receivers are also tunned to a specific band only.
Transmitters, transmitter modules and receivers can be re-tunned if sent back to the manufactuer but this comes at a cost. It is not recomended trying this at home as specialised equipment and extensive knowledge is required.
