10th anniversary of robots.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ROBOT WARS! Very Happy

On August 20, 1994 17 robots from 3 weight classes entered into a compitition at Fort Mason, San Francisco for the first ever Robot Wars. None of the builders had any idea of what to expect and the robots where all simple by todays standards. The robots included
AndyRoid - a puppet sitting on a tricycle.
Satoru Special - a rocket propelled car.
JulieBot - Featuring a decapitated dolls head that talked.
Ramfire 2000 - nicely built buy those standards
DooLittle - could only move forwards.
The Master - still competing today.
Beetle - wooden construction.
Tiny Tim - a huge forklift.
X1 - lightweight.
Zomo
Spiny Norman - the only lightweight to take on a heavy weight and win by KO!
The South Bay Mauler - entered only because it was cheaper to enter a robot than pay for tickets.

The competition was split into three rounds: Face-off, Escort and the grand Mellee.

Today Robot Combat is a world wide sport with 1000's of robots competing in 11 weight catagories and is here to stay.

As Supreme Commander Tilford told the Cammeras after Mauler won that first Mellee:
"One of the things I like about this is that it's not vrtual reality, it's not software, it obeys the basic laws of physics."
"That's the world out here in engineering: Adapt or Die!"

As they say "this robot is all about twisted steel and sex appeal".

Thanks to the boys at Team Delta for the video.
