I found just sketching large designs on large (A3?) cheap paper pads are a great way to work out ideas with out getting too technical... you can do it at school too! Very Happy

you dont have to draw it out straight just give yourself a general idea of what you need done and whack in the dimensions. thats what some people do for specific parts but i dont know anyone who does it for a full robot design.

some just design it in there heads and build it as they go, works fine for them

Drawing a bot in detail is a great way to pick up design flaws. You can draw a bot with many layouts. Keep every drawing. You can look back over them for inspiration.

I have 50 - 100 drawing beside my chair in the lounge room. Karen doesn't mind a bit.

There are quite a few free CAD programs too - try a quick Google Search and you will find quite a range. There are a bunch of CAD forums as well, with helpful experts around. If you get a popular program, there are libraries of pre-drawn bot parts free for the taking so you don't have to do so many of the fiddley bits.

I use Corel Draw (which is crap but I know it backwards) and TurboCAD, which is cheap.
