I'm not particularly fussed either way, but wasn't part of the idea of this event to encourage innovation and new design? I'm all for seeing something new as long as it doesn't involve Jake using a quantum black hole to attract the balls Very Happy

blast
*ominous hum fades*

personally i think there should be a rule on "collecting area" or something like that otherwise your just going to wind up with some bigass V shapes.

mmm that appeals, do whatever you want to get the balls so long as its no bigger than X (i'm thinking 20cm of frontal area)

I liked the option of an active catcher - it encourages inovation and helps existing bots get retrofited with something that might be effective. Having a frontal area restriction will rule out some robots entirely, Speedhump in particular. Since this is a no-points, fun competition event, why not just allow all the craziest Heath Robinson type ideas to come out? The winner will probably be a simple Vee scoop and fast driving anyway...

what about limiting size by area, like we discussed with Nar-Karts

That way people can still innovate but cannot have too big a robot..

for comparison speedbump is 107cm wide and 15cm long.

so, in that idea what about limiting the robot to 2000 square centimetres floor size?

that covers crazy robots like speedbump (1605 square cm)

but also allows normal square bots (40cm by 50cm)

or whatever shape in between

I would take it to mean the longest measure in each direction.

The size limitation is the broadest design rule so far, but why have more limitations in the first place? I can see an easy way around this particular one is to build vertically, so the robot takes less floor space.

We already have the weight limitation as discussed above and if we introduce more rules we will just reduce the entrants and quality of the event, something no one wants. Most existing bots will need a mod or two to be effective in this event and that will mean increasing the outside dimensions since no bots have much spare space inside.

Why not just stick to the 13.6 to 15Kg weight range? It will allow everyone to compete without allowing extreme mods

can we ram people and stuff to stop them scoring?

would having a 5m wide robot really help anyway if the goals are only small enough to let a couple of golf balls in at a time?, youd be better off making a small fast robot in that case.

Glen's on the right track! Putting a limitation on just encourages disign in a different direction. I want to see as much variety as possible.
