Updates and changes to the basic build rules have been added to the bot-bash specs page at http://www.allsuburbs.com/robots/botbash/bashspecs.html

As this part of the comp is new - I am "guiding" the attempts of the new teams to help minimise their problems . This takes time . There are 8 bash series robots being worked on at this point , but as they are new builders they are progressing slowly . Not everyone has bothered to register on the teams page at
http://www.allsuburbs.com/robots/botbash/botbash_teams.html

Very few of the existing Robowars compeditiors completly qualify for "bot-bash" - but I will allow them to enter a "bash" event provided they dont have a active weapon ( I can allow most things on a existing bot - "short term" but I cannot allow active weapons as this is directly against the main intent of the comp ) .
I expect the first match will probably be a mini-bash class event between two new small teams probably at the next rye event (4th June "Junkyard" Rye : Starts 2pm) . Mini-bash is of course the easiest class to build because it allowes you to "convert" a existing remote control car or build a completly new 3kg bot .
http://www.allsuburbs.com/robots/botbash/bashminispecs.html

We may run a small test fight in Rye earlier if the bots are complete in time

Question is
Do some people want a entry level comp in nsw and others simply dont want to listen ?. If you get the public involved you may find you need one . Beliving that the public only wants destruction is false as they actually want action and entertainment .

Everyone likes destruction as long as *they* arent paying the repair bill.. Wink

After multiple repair bills and watching a few slaughterings you will realise its not the destruction that counts, its the *competition* that makes it exciting.

Noone stands around watching a car crusher squash cars for more than a few minutes without getting bored, despite the "destruction".

What makes for an exciting fight is the *battle* where the viewers can "feel" the conflict between two struggling roughly equal opponents and are uncertain of the outcome until near the ending. Sure, the occasional hiding is temporarily fun, but not for long, most people would rather watch an even battle than a rout any day.

The hard part is trying to show people this since they naturally all want to play in the "Pro" class and deal out their imagined destruction and carnage to all challengers..

But once they see the cost of stepping into the ring on a par with experienced combatants, and learn that if you want to give it out, you have to be able to take it as well, and sometimes *you* will be the one on the losing end of the destruction, then they might change their minds and set their sights a little lower to start with..

The main problem I see is that Bot-Bash is mainly aimed at the younger more inexperienced builders, who hate being told that their dreams have to pass the reality test and actually be paid for in terms of time, money and effort. Most of them want to run before they can even walk..

If people can get over that sort of unrealistic expectation, then I think the BotBash class will do well..

i must be the exception, in the last year ive fought jolt 5 times and plan b once and orbit once, and rebuilt the bot twice as well as having to take it apart to belt it back to shape and replace every busted part in there...

i wouldnt have it any other way because if it where it would basically be a sad version of marayong 1 and 2 just happening a few years later...

but that is beside the point anyway, if the bot bash class can prevent kiddies coming in proclaiming there heavyweight full body spinner go for it (i cant even look at my first posts on the abbl forum without total disgust and embarressment lol)

Well, i would have benefited from a NSW botbash comp, with my robot being completely trashed by two hightech robots (well, one was and the other just powerfull). and is now unrepairable. it's this price and sophictication differance that makes botbash so appealing to me. Although damage doesn't really annoy me that much, it's the fact that I can't afford mills, Ti and other materials which will almost always make my robots fail against them. Sure, there are some robots that have been cheaply built, and are successfull, but at the moment, it's unlikly i could do that... Confused
Although now i'm making a drum-bot, so i won't be able to compete... Mad

Might i also say that in the last few months i've learnt SO much, and the stupid responses i constantly get from kids like "put a tazer on it!", are REALLY starting to bug me... Smile

i dont think anybody in NSW is "anti" bot bash.

people do want to see destruction, i mean they flocked to watch the christians being fed to the lions. what people would like to see is 2 higly destructive bots going the full 3 minutes beating the snot out of each other with one claiming victory by damaging the other one to the point it dosent work any more.
followed up by the feel good where the person who lost plugs something back in and does a (slightly wonky) lap of the arena.

"aww he was killed, but just a little"

bot bash wont get to the PB V IG (in pushybot mode) or Jolt V Cobra matches where bots get some pretty serious air.

it aint a rambot unless you get air ;-> its a pushybot.

by the same token i think asking dyrodium to compete against Jolt isnt paticularly crash hot but as it stands now theres only one person in "that class" if more people want to come along with bot bash class bots then they are welcome to and we'll help them build them if they want.

but cobra is a bot bash class compeditor and it stood up well (hell the best) to jolt. undefeated untill the last round as i recall?

what i dont want to see is fracturing of the comp.
same goes for weights. we are a small community so we need as many people to compete in the one class as possible to make it viable.

lightweights well atm everybody is looking at doing them as a bit of a "fun" thing so it shouldnt pull too much from the current fetherweight class.

Running the only public competition has provided us with the unique ability to study what our present crowds are actually cheering for . Action is the word , not destruction . The crowds want entertainment . They really don’t care if its small debris or large debris .

Yes people flocked to see the Christians be murdered by the lions – but that civilization died . People can recognize a even fight and spot an unfair one . Yes some will relish in the destruction for a short time , but without entertainment the crowds will eventually leave .

Our main comp is only restricted by the normal rules and I feel it should stay that way . New entrants are not given any quarter , even when they are obviously suffering radio problems as the videos show them being slaughtered .

To combat this sort of problem – the bash series has been created to allow competitors a starting point , without restricting the main comp . One of our “entry” level Victorian bots hasn’t been heard from since he was killed by a NSW bot at “Robowars II” . It was his first outing . He couldn’t move out of the starters block and died there .

I have started two entry level classes , being Bot-Bash (13.6kg) and Mini-Bash (3kg) . Both are for people who are inexperienced to gain knowledge without being ripped apart before they learn how to make their bot move .

The pic relay controller is being developed for these classes as it provides a effective , cheap yet simple control system , and allows competitors the chance to commit small amounts of money while they develop their bot .

As for other "bash" class robots in NSW - You will never have them unless you are truly prepared to support them and the people who build them .

Hmm, is this turning into an interstate thing? I hope not! It would be great to see the bash series work in Victoria, but I can't see it working in NSW as we don't have he right resources. Our equivalent seems to be an informal mentoring system, where we help each other out with specialist skills. I can't remember an event where one team wasn't helping rebuild another's damaged bot.

Between events, many builders help each other out and collectively we have raised the bar several notches over the past year. I seems to me that some of the newer builder's bots would have been event winners a year or two ago and if we help them out with the right engineering skills, they will soon be holding their own against the veterans.
